Re:
Washington Watcher’s Column:
The
Next Roe vs. Wade? Obama’s Pyrrhic Victory in Arizona
President Bill Clinton may have appointed Judge Susan
Bolton. But
"senatorial courtesy"
got her there, just as it got
Supreme Court Justice
Sonia Sotomayor
to her first judicial appointment.
Senator John Kyl
is responsible for Arizona-based Bolton in the same way
as the late New York Senator Patrick Moynihan was for
Sotomayor.
Kyl
and his colleague
John
McCain
have several things in common. One of one of them is
that they both have the same immigration report card
rating:
D+.
While McCain was pandering to
Arizona’s Hispanic lobby, Kyl was busily engaged
seeing that the
Chamber of Commerce,
which has supported his campaigns, had its agenda
satisfied. Anyone who thinks Kyl or McCain are hawks on
immigration is delusional. Since Kyl wanted Bolton as much as
Clinton and others who vetted her candidacy did, her
decision therefore came as no surprise to anyone in the
know.
And if you will pardon my seeming immodesty, even after
reading an Associated Press story that appeared in the
Washington Post about Bolton’s hard line against government lawyers,
I didn’t have the slightest doubt either what her ruling
would be. [Judge
in Arizona Case Well-Versed in Immigration,
by Jacques Billeaud, Associated Press, July 20, 2010]
The Post story
merely set the stage for Bolton’s
predictable decision
